Comic Con Yorkshire ‘24 Part 1

“I tried to make it as real as possible,” says Craig Fairbrass. “I heard it on the radio.”

He’s referring to The Rettonden Murders, on the night of 6th December 1995, in which 3 cocaine dealers were shotgunned to death in their Range Rover. The murders inspired countless documentaries (including a lacklustre radio doc I made in college) and a string of movies, most notably the Rise of the Footsoldier franchise. In these movies Fairbrass has been playing Pat Tate, one of the murdered dealers, since the first film came out in 2007. “There was a 10 year break between the first 2 movies. It was so successful because of the fans. We took half a million on the first one. It was an exciting part to play.”

Wikipedia says the original Rise of the Footsoldier took 220 grand, but okay.

The Rise of the Footsoldier panel also includes Frank Harper, who portrayed rival dealer and gunman Jack Whomes, and this is the first panel of the day at Comic Con Yorkshire

The event has returned to Yorkshire Event Centre for a second year, this time also featuring 4 Dr Who actors from differing time periods, plus actors from other franchises.

Compare Tom Finkill starts the questions, which tease out behind-the-scenes stories about Fairbrass having a handful of hair gel when he got to meet Denzel Washington, and another incident when Harper was taken to meet real-life gangster Ronnie Kray. (“He brought out a pot of tea. He said, ‘Shall I be mother?’ and started pouring for everyone.”) To round off, it’s revealed that Terry Stone’s wig, transforming him into cocaine dealer Tony Tucker, we learn cost 17 grand to make. A questionable investment, if you ask me.

Local rock group Lina and the Lions take the stage next.

The next stage attraction is the Dr Who panel.

“It looks like a box,” explains Nicola Byrant, “But it’s not a box. It blows your mind.”

Byrant, who plays assistant Peri to the 5th and 6th Doctor Whos, camps it up for the audience, a good portion of whom are kids, giving us a rundown on the Tardis. She’s on stage today with Christopher Eccleston (9th Doctor), Paul McGann (8th Doctor) and Colin Baker (6th Doctor).

“I wanted to do something for the hearts and minds of younger people,” says Salford-born Eccleston. “Something fun.”

Colin Baker, as it happened, wanted to tell us about a knock on his trailer door one day. “This girl wanted me to sign her old breast implant. I should have said, ‘I feel a right tit!’”

“I was sent a lock of someone’s body hair,” claims Byrant. “A part you can cut it off with scissors. Not a part you’d normally see. Another guy wanted me to sign his arse. I did. But where do you put your other hand to stabilise it?”

“Today, during the photo opp,” Eccleston reveals, “I was given a knitted COVID germ! The girl said, ‘I want to give all the Doctors COVID!’” He goes on to tell us he was once told he ‘dances like he’s recently assembled.’

Tom proposes a game of ‘Never Have I Ever,’ the results of which raises a few eyebrows. “When I got pulled over for speeding,” Byrant says, “the police said ‘Oh my god, you’ve got a Tardis, you can go as fast as you want.’”

“That’s an advantage of your gender,” gripes Baker. “When I tried it, they were like, ‘Oh, you think you’re famous, you can speed…’” He goes on to tell us he admires Jennifer Lawrence, and her body, he pauses, of work.

None have watched Love Island.

McGann nearly got the titular role of Napoleonic TV series Sharpe, but broke his leg in Ukraine. This role then famously went to Sean Bean. Eccleston tells us of his career regrets. “I’ve done so much shit for money. But still, it was good money. Well, I lost it.”

Part 2 to come.

Comic Con Fit: Review

Back in mid-May I made a plan to get fit for an upcoming Comic Con in Yorkshire, an event that took place last weekend. I’m still working on the event blog post. The fitness plan was to lose around 4+1/2 kilos in 6 weeks. That way I’d look suitably slim on camera when meeting celebs.

I started at 75.9kg, ate a ton of soup, cooked some recipes (stay tuned for the reviews) and ended at 73.7. Shit. I had managed to get down to 72.4 at one point, but I somehow back-pedalled. I don’t think I prepped enough for lunch and ended up buying some… regrettable food in work.

Since the 11th May, though, I’ve made a few achievements with fitness. Most notably, I’ve been attempting a series of 10-minute runs. For a long time, between 2013 and 2024, this had been my longest-standing PB. I just couldn’t get anywhere near it. Then, right at the end of January, I managed the fabled 14.2km/ph for a full 10 minutes. I’d done it. After all the excesses of Christmas, I’d turned it around.

Since then, I’ve bashed away at running, seeing if I could improve this, burn the fat and get back into the suit trousers. The local 5.4km circuit I do helps me get some vitamin D outdoors, but I couldn’t get anywhere near a PB on that. Running at the gym, however, has come on leaps and bounds. On 11th May I’d been able to run 10 mins at 14.4km/ph. I managed to push the speed up to 14.7km/ph on the 18th June.

Swings and roundabouts. Anyway, I’m going to take a short break from being a fitness nut, get drunk on a few meetups, get a takeaway (I’m already back up to 77.5kg) then get back on it in time for the Manchester Comic Con in July where I should be meeting Ralph from Heat / Foster dad Todd from Terminator 2, Special Agent Gibbs in Air Force One and Helen’s boyfriend Trevor in Candyman, esteemed actor Xander Berkley. I’ll also get a photo with Edward Furlong (John Connor) from Terminator 2, Alien’s Captain Dallas and Top Gun’s Viper, Tom Skerritt

Comic Con, House Music, UFC, Manc Mates

On the blog: a review of the Comic Con Fit project that I grafted over for 6 weeks, and a write-up of the actual Comic Con in Yorkshire that I got fit for. Then I’m going to attempt the fitness project again.

Also, expect a piece on potential movie sequels.

On Friday, Meetup group Manchester Nightlife are heading to Cutting Room Square in Ancoats for a few cocktails. Get involved! Meet new people, try some hipster bars or possibly craft ales if that’s your thing. Counter House, 9pm.

Saturday night: my mate DJ Bini takes over the decks at Ashton’s Chute Bar for a night of house music. She’s there the Friday too.

Later on in the night, 3am to be precise, the UFC 303 main card begins, with Light Heavyweight champ Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira taking on Jiri ‘BJP’ Prochazka and Irish fighter Ian Machado ‘The Future’ Garry facing Englishman Michael ‘Venom’ Page. (Page is born in London, don’t be fooled by the 3 foreign flags he has on his Insta.): With UFC veterans Brian Ortega and Anthony Smith also on the card, we can expect an explosive evening. Will Genting Casino be showing it? It’s hit and miss, unfortunately. They might. I don’t know anywhere else that does.

While writing this blog I’ve made a snap decision: Meetup group Manc Mates needed an organiser otherwise it would have folded in less than a month. I’ve stepped up. As a paying Meetup organiser I can take over it at no extra cost to me. The group has 257 members and is a little broader than just nightlife, with other activities on offer like restaurant meets. I’m going to suggest, in this group, we go more eclectic still. I’ve always wanted to try the indoor baseball batting at BaseBarMCR, for example. There’s also the Comic Con at the end of July that other people might want to visit. I know I will.

The next few weekends will be packed with Meetups, conventions and UFC shows (304 is in Manchester and is the same weekend as the Comic Con, and my birthday as it happens). Be part of it!

One further update: Mike Quinn, Nien Nunb from Empire Strikes Back / Return of the Jedi liked my insta pic of us.

Comic Con Yorkshire this weekend

Comic Con Yorkshire returns to Yorkshire Event Centre this weekend for its second year. Last year’s event with John Cleese was a brilliant, huge landing. Immense building, brilliant guests, jaw-dropping panels.

This year sees Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito and a plethora of Dr Who actors including Paul McGann from Withnail & I and Alien 3. Tickets are still available!

As mentioned last month, my aim was to lose 4 kilos in time for the con. I have 1 more kilo to lose.

On the blog, expect write-ups of the above 2, a piece on low Emotional Quotient (EQ), an article about potential movie sequels plus a review of a fish recipe.

Spinningfields Meetup

Manchester Nightlife Meetup group went to Spinningfields for our second outing last night. Meeting in Oast House, a diverse crowd of us moved onto Sunset By Australasia, then The Ivy where we threw around ideas for nights out, told jokes and tried cocktails.

A good night. Looking forward to running another soon, probably on the 29th. The group has now hit 100 members!

Also this week, I noticed that Pickle isn’t working. Pickle I’d describe as like Tinder for new mates and events. People upload that they want to do something, like a sport or drinks, and the app shows their location in relation to your own.

Looks like I’m sticking with Meetup, then.

New restaurant Onda Pasta Bar opened at Circle Square, the old BBC site. They were booked up, but here’s what the area looks like now:

Fresh Tuna, Spring Onions, Mango and Coriander with Quinoa

This was a really interesting and challenging recipe for a few reasons.

First, I had to go to three different supermarkets to find all the ingredients. Aldi was the only one with tuna steaks, and Tesco was the only one with black sesame seeds, for example.

I added in a sweet and normal potato to bulk it up for three people. Time in the book was 40 mins, took me over 60.

Very spicy, full of flavour. Mine came out a little too liquid. Perhaps a little longer in might have worked, although the tuna steaks were just right. Parents came around, everything came out right in the end.

From Rukmini Iyer's The Roasting tin.

Onda Pasta Launch / Spinningfields Drinks

Last week author Robert Greene- he of 48 Laws of Power and others – liked my Instagram comment. It’s currently top comment on his post

Wednesday night: new restaurant Onda Pasta launches in Circle Square off Oxford Rd. They're a bit backwards in coming forwards, with limited information on thier socials, but I may pop in. They have dished out free Tiramasu in the runup to their launch, so who knows what might be on offer on the day.

Sadly we lost a great bar this week. Firefly in Spinningfields closed its doors, with bosses citing an ‘unsuccessful lease renewal.’ A small, trendy bar with a lot of greenery in it, if I recall. Sad to see it go.

There are plenty others if you want high-end cocktails, and that’s why I set up a new meetup for Saturday night. Manchester Nightlife heads to Oast House, home of live music and outdoor summer drinking. The plan: check out some other nearby bars, try some cocktails, sample the nightlife. Perhaps stay out later and move further afield. Expect sharp dΓ©cor, smart dress, house music, hip hop music and a great top row.I have 5 people booked to come so far. Make it 6!

Manchester Nightlife Group

Well, I bit the bullet and shelled out to set up my own Meetup group. Meetup.com, set up in the wake of 9/11 to bring communities closer together, has expanded rapidly over the last 10 years. I resisted for long enough (since 2009, when I first joined the site, in fact) and shelled out the £70 for a 6-month membership. I’m planning to get my money’s worth by uploading quite a few events.

So, Manchester Nightlife group is live now, and as of Wednesday night has been racking up members, with over 70 joined so far.

Last night I went on my first Manchester Nightlife meetup. One other member came out; we did a few bars around the top end of the Northern Quarter: Stevenson Square, Hilton Street, Tariff St etc. Decent night.

I’ve got loads of ideas in the pipeline for nights around Spinningfields, Deansgate, Ancoats and other areas. I’ll do another meetup soon.

Baked Egg Pasta Florentine

I’m making a point now of opening the cookbook every Thursday, picking a recipe, adding the ingredients to a shopping list, going to the supermarket(s) to buy everything on the Friday night (sometimes the ingredients can only be found in certain places) and cooking the recipe on the Saturday.

It seems to be working and my weight is coming down, and PBs are going up at the gym. It works.

Last week I cooked this Italian dish from Rukmini Iyer's The Roasting Tin.

Prep and cooking time was 50 mins, took me 60. All good. I forgot to keep some of the pasta water, which might have dried it out a bit, but it was still really tasty.

If you’re a fan of eggs, spinach, nutmeg, pasta and chorizo, this combination is a treat.

Tender Launch

New restaurant Tender opened to the public last night, in the opulent Stock Exchange building, built in 1902 on Norfolk St, just off King St in the financial district. Trading stopped there in 1992; 27 years later the doors opened again as a boutique hotel.

Now, restauranteurs GG Hospitality brings us Tender, an upmarket bar and restaurant.

Door staff and a piano player welcome the customer into the foyer, then through to the main hall where we’re treated to more live music with a singer / guitar duo. Detail is everything: green and gold theme, drinks with glass straws, abstract art, discreet lighting and friendly staff.

I’d question the pricing: why is a mocktail coming in at £9 (chargeable at the end of your visit, which I nearly forgot), when spirits are served from the £4-£8 range? That said, cocktails themselves are all £14, dearer than most Spinningfields offerings, for example. Also, spot the misplaced apostrophe in the drinks menu.

If you fancy a change from the aforementioned area, maybe take a look in Tender.

The Footage has Closed / Tender Opening

Manchester institution and student bar The Footage has closed, The Manc reports. Long live The Footage. It turns out that holding company Stonegate is in £2.2 billion of debt.

I went there loads in my uni days – ‘02-05, mostly – and usually because that’s where my mates wanted to go. I wasn’t enamoured, although I do remember pulling there a handful of times. Even after graduating, I went back a handful of times, largely because other people, again, wanted to go.

I remember in about 2006 going with a school mate and someone he knew, and we landed on karaoke night, it seems. We all did a turn on the mic, singing Love on the Rocks and You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling etc. After this, some drama troupe rocked up – freshers, by the look of it – who wanted to sing We Go Together from the Grease movie, only they had apparently requested to sing it acapella. The DJ obliged.

They were, frankly, terrible. I started to boo, and my two mates joined in. Soon the whole bar was booing this drama group. “You suck,” I yelled, ala Mrs Crabtree from South Park. Other people hurl other insults. The troupe battle through to the end of the song and slink offstage.

Not my proudest moment now I think of it.

In other news, new restaurant Tender opens in the Stock Exchange on Wednesday, describing itself as ‘a luxury dining experience for the senses.’ I might go see what mocktails they have.

Also, I have another recipe review to go up.

Tortilla launch in Arndale

Mexican eatery Tortilla opened a third site in the city centre this yesterday, adding to their Oxford Rd branch (opened in September 2022) and the Piccadilly Train Station site.

Find the latest addition in the Arndale, close to the entrance of the Arndale Market.

Tasty food, friendly staff, spicy sauce. There was a free lunch giveaway on the Friday, before the official opening; sadly I was in work.

Mum’s All-in-one Spiced Tomato Rice

Not my mum’s, but Rukmini Iyer’s mum’s recipe is a simple, tasty vegan dish that made a few meals.

I had to use a pot of garlic granules as, predictably, the garlic cloves in my cupboard dried up long ago. My cooking time was substantially longer. Was this due to memory difficulties? Probably. The rice took a long time to absorb the liquid. Should have been 35 mins, took me 1hr 7.

Enjoyed it in the end, though!
