Vitamin experiment fail

Last week I was talking to my parents about Echinacea tablets, a 'natural' remedy for flu and low mood. I blogged about it here

I have memory difficulties from a head injury, which is the underlying issue behind my depression. But, as I emphasise in most of these Psychology Saturday blog posts, I'm working on it. In this instance, my memory stepped in the way of me making sense. My mum had spoken to me about the benefits of Echinacea, but had also discussed vitamin D. I spend most of my time indoors, and don't get the sunlight that perhaps others do, and with summer not yet here I could do with a boost. Mum had actually given me vitamin D tablets. The 2 conversations, about the 2 vitamins, must have amalgamated in my head, resulting in last week's post.

So. I've now been taking vitamin D tablets for a week. I've also gone out and bought echinacea, but I'm not mixing it in for the moment.

One of the solid measurement systems for testing a drug's effectiveness is looking at gym records. However, the whole country is pretty much on lockdown, so even if the gym is open (I haven't checked) I haven't been in a week. Mum has a health condition, so I'm not risking catching something while working out and passing it on. That and I pulled something in my back running up the stairs. I'm keeping public contact to a minimum. Is this expected once you get into your late 30s?

So yeah, I'll keep taking the vit-D and see what happens.

At a Loose End?

Despite the mass self isolation, Manchester still has the remnants of a social scene, as can be seen online. Carefully shot videos of clubs, stragglers encouraged to dance in one corner of the dance floor to make it look busy, are tentatively uploaded to official Facebook pages. Plucky young outgoing types open Meetup groups like 'At a Lose End' (sic) Manchester Brunch Club, Manchester Acting Club and 'Laughter Yoga.' My money's on all 4 folding within 3 months.

Andy's Man Club is closed for a minimum of 3 Mondays. I hope this Coronavirus shit gets under control, but with that bumbling twat Boris in charge I highly doubt it'll be any time soon.

Reasons to Stay Alive

Reasons to Stay Alive

Big Green Bookshop very recently and very kindly sent me a copy of Matt Haig's Reasons to Stay Alive, an analysis and memoir of the writer's battles with depression. The short, bite-sized book takes small day-to-day examples of Haig's life, and his challenges with his mental health. The (now older) author looks back on this time and wisely interprets his actions and emotions. It's a valuable self-help tool, as well as an interesting true story.

It's great if you're dealing with the condition now, as it'll explain a lot and much of it will resonate with you. But I'd imagine it to be hugely helpful to those who don't have depression, as most of us who battle it want others to at least be aware of what the condition is, and what they can do. Joanna Lumley called it 'a short masterpiece that might even save lives.' I'd have to agree.

Separately, I got a tweet off Darth Maul from Star Wars.

Try Echinacea Tablets for Flu and Anxiety Prevention

Coneflower

I've recently got over a cold (no, it wasn't COVID-19, before you speculate) and I plan on staying over it. I'm also, as per, battling anxiety.

I've recently acquired of a pot of echinacea tablets, a herbal remedy from the purple coneflower, which grows in North America and Europe. Among its many benefits: it fights flu, and it helps manage anxiety. I'm taking these at night alongside 15mg of antidepressant Mirtazapine. I've had this routine for a few days.

With all the hand-washing and self-isolating going on (I don't want to be flippant but this is ruining my social life) I may not get the opportunities to challenge my anxiety. But I'm out tonight in the Northern Quarter, where things have gone well before, so who knows. I'll let you know next week.
