Escalivada

From Rukmini Iyer’s The Green Roasting Tin: Escalivada, a Spanish aubergine-based veggie dish.

Supposed to be 70 mins, took me 96. Aldi tomatoes had 5 in the pack, not the recommended 6, plus I didn’t serve with bread as I’m not eating it at the moment. Still aiming for 72kg, and I’m a long way off. I used dried basil, not fresh, as I’d never get through a packet in time on my own. Same for ground garlic granules, not garlic cloves. Thrown away enough of them. Neither the fridge nor cupboard will store them effectively. The lemon and sea salt mixture, poured over the veg, really brought out the taste.

Really getting into veg. May have to do this recipe lark more than once a week.

Spinningfields, House Music in Ashton, Paralympics

The weekend after a Bank Holiday is usually a quiet one, but not this coming: I’m out Friday and Saturday.

Manchester Nightlife are venturing to Spinningfields again Friday, this time to try out a few that I haven’t taken the Meetup group to so far: potentially BLVD and Menagerie, although we’ll see where the night takes us. Get involved.

My mate’s house music brand Hype/Drive returns to Ashton’s Chute Bar this Saturday. Facebook event here. Recently reopened Chute is the destination for house music in northern Greater Manchester without having to trek into Manchester.

I’m not sure a Manchester-based Meetup group would be the right place to advertise it, really.

Paralympic opening ceremony is 7pm Wednesday. 2 more weeks of sport. More chin-ups as per this ridiculous Olympic Workout project.

Freight Island

Giving blood last week absolutely beat the shit out of me. I’ve been so tired and weak, like a bout of flu took over me (without the coughing and sneezing). Steadily getting back to normal. I took it easy in the gym classes I did.

Last night Manchester Nightlife Meetup group went to Freight Island for outdoor food, drinks, house music and meeting new people. Good group. Fine weather too. Freight Island is a new venue with indoor and outdoor seating, standalone food venues offering a range of cultures: Italian, Peruvian, Indian etc.

I was sober obv.

In other news, Northern Quarter bar Luck, Lust, Liqour and Burn has closed for good. It was on my list to visit. Never got around to it, like so many others.

Also, Starship Troopers frontman Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico) mentioned on Instagram Live (because I asked him) he plans to come to a UK convention at some point. He was a guest at Dublin Comic Con. Get on it, Monopoly

Instagram date stamps are back. You can now see (again) which days you uploaded.

It is now bank holiday and I have no plans.

Roasted Tomato & Bay Orzo

I got Rukmini Iyer’s The Green Roasting Tin – full of vegetarian and vegan dishes – for my birthday. I’m trying to pump more veg into my body so I figured I’d start here.

First up: All-in-one Roasted Tomato & Bay Orzo with Black Pepper. A simple, small vegan dish, this one has a short cook and prep time. I bulked it up by using a whole onion, not the instructed half, and dried basil from a pot rather than fresh that I’d never use up in time. Was supposed to take 30 mins, took me 46. No biggie.

Unique taste. I liked.

Come Get Food at Freight Island

Still all over the place after giving blood yesterday. Will be reet by tomorrow.

Will definitely be on form by Saturday, when I’m running a joint Meetup to new Manchester food venue Freight Island. Both Manchester Nightlife and Manc Mates have the event listed now. Come meet new friends, get food from a choice of places, get drinks and listen to some great house music. I’ve never been before so come try it out with me. 7pm Saturday.

TV show Brassic comes to Netflix on Thursday. A bunch of wheeler dealer lowlifes get by with scheming and dodgy deals, all the while dealing with mental health issues. Will they get out of their deprived Lancashire town and make better lives for themselves?

I managed to get to the press screening for this somehow in August 2019. Brilliant evening meeting the cast. The show was funnier than I expected.

Alien Raft Blood

Saw Alien Romulus Friday. The best out of the 3 most recent Alien films. Says something when a largely unknown director can do it better than Ridley Scott.

Alien / Predator screenwriters just can’t resist nodding to previous instalments though, can they? The Rook android (a digitally regenerated Ian Holm) tells the doomed crew ‘you have my sympathies,’ ala Ash from the original. Similarly, Alien vs Predator Requiem includes the original Predator movie line ‘get to the chopper.’

Romulus is well worth a watch. Not, however, worth the 15 bastard quid I paid for a standard Oldham Odeon adult seat.

Saturday night: Meetup group Manchester Nightlife visited Raft, the new castaway themed bar in Spinningfields’ The Avenue. We moved onto Oast House and Banyan, and then tried Dirty Martini on Peter St. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Good team. I left early.

Today I gave blood at Norfolk House just off Market St. Glad to do my part, but the donation left me feeling nauseous to the point I passed out. Collection was a success. Then I ate a load of orange Club chocolate biscuits. They advised me not to donate again. Glad to have done my part though. I went home and fell asleep.

Keralan Potato Curry

From the vegan section of Rukmini Iyer’s India Express cookbook comes Keralan Potato Curry with Chickpeas and Coconut.

Should have taken 25 mins. Took me 45. Simple but, for me, time consuming. Life with memory difficulties.

Tasted great after a re-fry. Just needed more browning.

Before 43 Bucket List

It’s that time of year again. Here are some goals for the next 12 months. I actually ran out of projects in April, with 3 months to go, last time, so let’s be a little optimistic this time. What do I want to do in the next 12 months?

1) Get 1000 members in Manchester Nightlife

I set up Meetup group Manchester Nightlife in early June. I’ve since amassed over 200 members and ran 6 events. I’d like to make the group a lot bigger, make it more known both on the Meetup scene and off it. I’d like to get people to try out Meetup for the first time, for a proper night out as opposed to early doors drinks as many other groups do.

But how? I bet there’s a way of getting people to try out Meetup. Street approaches, encouraging people to download the Meetup app? Leaving comments on Reddit? Using Manchester – related hashtags on X (formerly Twitter)?

Any suggestions?

2) See more of Scandinavia

Copenhagen in April involved some superb museums, great food, Baltic swimming and cycling. See day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4

There are other Scandinavian capitals I’d love to see – Oslo and Reykjavik in particular – but they’re a lot dearer. I’m hoping to get to see more Viking museums.

Oslo has The Viking Planet; Reykjavik has Viking World (although their socials don’t seem to be active). Other museums pique my interest like, in Oslo, the Münch Museum (same lack of socials). In Norway’s capital I wouldn’t want to miss The Northern Lights, the fjords, observatory spots like the Sky Bar, hipster areas and fine architecture like the train station. Alternatively the Swedish capital Stockholm holds the Vasa Warship, an excavated and preserved 1600s Navy vessel, plus at least one Viking museum.

3) A third Viking project

Back in May to August, I tried to learn as much as I could about the Viking era and my family’s connection to it (the Tuckey surname deriving from the Toki Viking tribe). I spent a month researching, and another month cooking and working out in ways that Vikings would have done. In a third project, I’d do a lot more chin-ups and dips, as Vikings would doubtlessly have done. There were plenty of door frames and trees a thousand years ago. They would have used rocks for deadlifts (I’ll stick to the standard bar and discs). Axe cutting was a frequent exercise (pulley work at the gym can replicate this movement). Whilst doing this, I’d eat twice a day, follow recipes from the Eat Like a Viking cookbook and watch a ton of Vikings Valhalla and The Vinland Saga on Netflix.

4) See other parts of the world

We’re quite fortunate to be so close to mainland Europe and be able to dip in and out of countries, rather than have to go on an American-style backpacking tour. An occasional nosey around Skyscanner would throw up some feasible possibilities. I’m looking at this week’s offers and Naples, Milan, Verona and Venice are all under £100 1 way. Easyjet has other deals not listed on the aforementioned site: Belfast, Barcelona and Paris are some excellent destinations at their lowest prices.

Do I want to do this solo, though? Not wise when you have memory difficulties and unfamiliar places are a big challenge. Who would I travel with? It looks like, for the moment, I need to work on the new friendships I’m forming though Meetup.

5) Teeline for a month again

I’ve made a few attempts to learn Teeline shorthand over the years. I’ve used YouTube videos and a PDF guidebook and I’ve learned enough to make a decent amount of notes at conventions in order to put an interesting blog post together. Another bash at this would allow me to get more written down, use up less space in the book and read it back to myself with more clarity.

6) Learn nunchucks

Years ago, I trekked out to Decathalon in Stockport to buy some rubber-handled nunchucks. I dabbled around with a few YouTube videos to see if I could develop a bit of skill in them. What exactly I thought I’d use these Chinese martial art weapon skills for, I’ve no idea, although it is good for upper body fitness. It’s been my plan to focus on this for a month, and see what competence I can gain in it. I’ll upload a video at the end of that month.

7) Excess Month again

Back in November 2017 I tried a project in which I blogged every day as part of what was National Blog Posting Month, NaBloPoMo. I did this on the theme of ‘excess.’ I’d had an idea in my head to fill the month with events, alcohol, drugs, food, parties, nights out and not much sleep. I couldn’t quite make things as exciting as I’d hoped. These days, I have a Meetup group and a full cupboard of alcohol. I could work to the theme of excess again: trying to fill my life with as much activity as possible, trying to be as busy as I can. Would I be able to create content every day? Unlikely. I’d rather not upload drivel just to say I’ve uploaded something, which I suspect is how people interpreted it last time. I’d also try to not put on weight like I did last time too.

8) Veganuary

Last January, the Veganuary challenge was already taking place by the time I noticed it was a thing. The task: eat only vegan food for 1 month. For my birthday last month I got Rukmini Iyer’s The Green Roasting Tin book. It’s packed with vegetarian and vegan recipes. I’ve dabbled in it recently and had some success. (Recipe reviews will appear here soon.) I’ll also make a lot of soup and roast veg. Looking forward to a few chip naans with ketchup. I’m also hoping for PBs in running, chin-ups and dips. Will I make the hallowed 72kg and fit back into my suits? I hope so.

9) Touch type for a month again

I’ve made a few attempts over the years to brush up on typing and improve my speed and accuracy. I haven’t done this in recent years, though. Being a little bit faster would make things more efficient in work, where I do a lot of minutes, and would make blogging quicker, giving me more time for everything else in my life. I managed to get 47wpm last time. 40-60wpm is regarded a good speed for office work, my line of work.

10) Get back into 30” suit trousers again

I’m likely to be in Tenerife in May next year. When / if I am, I’d like to be a little trimmer – trim enough to wear my suit trousers. Not that I’ll be wearing them there, but around that time I’d like to. If my waistline is small enough, the likelihood is I’ll be fitter too, meaning activities like snorkelling with turtles and perhaps cycling around the island should be a doddle. I know I need to be 72.2kg to fit 30”.

10 is a good number of targets. Some of these can be worked on simultaneously, others not. We are now 2 weeks into the year of being 42. I’m already working on this Olympic Workouts project, and making progress with chin-ups and dips. Deadline is 10pm, 8th September. After that, I’ll charge through one of these.

Come try the new Raft

New Spinningfields bar Raft opened last month, a desert island themed venue. Come take a look on Saturday night as Meetup group Manchester Nightlife visit. Meet new people, try some cocktails, hear some good deep house music and after, we’ll try a few other bars too. Not a huge late one but a great opportunity to see more of the city and meet new people. You might even spot a celeb.

What else is happening?

New Alien movie Alien Romulus opens in cinemas Friday.

Doesn’t look massively original, but I’ll watch it anyway.

3 weeks to the Paralympics opening ceremony. Still working on this fitness project. Making progress.

Also, on the blog, expect some targets for the next year and another recipe review.

Peter St

Well, I ran the meetup to Peter St last night. Out of 7 RSVPs, 3 of us turned up. We did a few bars early on but didn’t stay late. It would have been good for people to actually do what they say they’re going to, but… This is the nature of Meetup and the nature of people in general.

Good people though. I hope they come to future meets.

I noticed this week that date stamps have been removed from Instagram. What a ballache. You now can’t see when any picture has been uploaded. Not an issue if you can remember when it was, but… I can’t. Hence, I have to share the upload to Facebook immediately then go back to Facebook to see when the upload was. I’m trying to upload something every day for the next few weeks. Don’t ask me why. I’m neurotic.

Oven Baked Asparagus and Parmesan

An interesting recipe, this required vegan parmesan which I couldn’t find in 3 different supermarkets, so I used the regular stuff. The instructions were otherwise clear and straightforward, the only complication and issue with my memory was that things took longer than the suggested time, as per. About an hour and a half in total. If you’re not an asparagus fan, you still might like this. I'm not and I did.

Before 42: Review

This time last year I set a few targets for the following 12 months. I actually managed to polish all of these off by April, meaning I could focus more on psychology and events blogging. The targets resulted in a mixed bag.

1) Social Media Experiment

Well, I tried to use X (formerly Twitter), this blog and a third site, Fame Registry, to boost my blog stats. Utter waste of time as the site was dead and hadn’t been updated in years. Plus X is a right-wing hellhole ran by a deluded billionaire nutter. Plus I ended up with a label on my account. Content is king. That’s how people will read your stuff: write well, and interest people with it. Don’t bother aggregating your stats by badgering people over social media.

2) Photography Month

I practised smartphone photography for a month. It was good to brush up, but I found it a difficult, slightly miserable experience. It felt like I was uninvolved with society, and felt tempted to dissociate to take pictures. There also wasn’t a great deal happening in the city in August / September last year. Brushed up on photography skills with YouTube videos, though. That’s going to help with blogging in future. I desperately need a new phone, though.

3) CBD and Memory

I started to take CBD every day back in September last year. This was in the hope that I might see some improvement on things like memory and anxiety. I reviewed it after a month: No difference. I continued using it, and researching it. I found other people were equally unimpressed. I finished the bottle in January. I can’t say there was much improvement to memory or mental health.

4) Zinc and Hair Growth

I’m now 42. Of course I’m losing my hair. You can only control the controllables, as they say. Like many people my age, I’m starting to thin on the crown of the head. There’s some evidence to suggest that the mineral zinc can help with follicle growth, but it didn’t seem to do me any good

5) Namman Muay and Flexibility

Namman Muay, or Muay Thai oil, is used by Muay Thai fighters to prevent bruising and accelerate recovery. There’s some suggestion that the ointment can increase flexibility too. I wanted to see if I could regain some of the flexibility I had in my late teens / early 20s. I sat down with my feet against the skirting board, and tried to edge my ankles out away from each other, whilst slapping on the pungent Namman Muay. Well, I made improvements throughout the 2 months I practised this, but got nowhere near my PB from 2014 by the time the bottle ran out. But at least I beat my running records. Did Namman Muay have anything to do with that? It was mostly improvements to diet.

6) See Scandinavia

I went to Copenhagen with the parents in April. See Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and Day 4. Incredible few days of museums, learning about Norse boat making from 1000 years ago, swimming in the Baltic and cycling. I’d love to get to a few more capital cities in Scandinavia. I’ve scouted out a few possibilities. They’re all a little dearer than Copenhagen though…

What a year. 5/6 of these challenges were failures. The last was a total success.

Peter St Drinks?

Who fancies doing some drinks on Peter St Saturday? Meetup groups Manchester Nightlife and Manc Mates are heading there on Saturday. Meet new people, see more of the city.

We’re starting in Exhibition at the top of the street and heading down towards Deansgate.

Olympic closing ceremony is Sunday night 8pm. Paralympic opening ceremony is Wednesday 28th, 7pm, so quite a way off, but I still want to beat some chin-up records in the interim.

Also on the blog, I’ll be going back over the goals I set 12 months ago and set a few new ones. There’ll also be a recipe review.
