Men's
mental health is a topic gaining traction in the new decade. No
longer a discussion swept under the rug, the idea of men discussing
their feelings is being embraced by more and more of the country.
This is evident in the steady but undeniable appearance of support
groups set up for this purpose- be it organised over Facebook, Meetup
or elsewhere. New support group Man Tuesday describes
itself as 'a safe, inclusive, collaborative, non-judgemental space
for men to gather, be themselves and talk openly about their
feelings, mental health, masculinity and life’s challenges.
Originally
operating in Saddleworth, their meetings are now held via
Zoom, the now hugely popular webcam /
mobile interface, on Tuesday nights. I gave it a shot this week. It's
a friendly, well-thought-out group with a few basic introductions,
after which the facilitator will suggest a few topics with a mental
health theme, allowing people to chip in with their thoughts.
Originally
the group was running monthly- now Zoom allows us to meet without
even leaving the house, it's much easier to have a weekly meeting.
This group I expect will form strong bonds very quickly.
