Come sample the new Shrimp bar

Last week Ryan Keely weighed in on the ‘baboon vs badger’ debate.

She did not in fact get back to me. Sarcasm much?

Also I passed 1.8 million hits on this blog. Experiencing an inexplicable surge. 150K in the last month. Incredible. At this rate I should pass the 2 million hit mark in a month.

This week: on Saturday I’ll hit a deadline for this Bodybuilding Project that I will have been doing for a month. Hoping to squeeze in a couple more PBs before then. Then, time to relax… Manchester Nightlife Meetup group is headed to Bar Shrimp, a new venue in New York St, right in the heart of the financial district. First time for me. First alcohol in a month for me.

Also, a book review, something on disability travel passes and a journaling event.

Cloud 23 Meetup

This week: My Meetup group Manchester Nightlife now has more members than Manc Mates, a group I took over that had been running a while before I became an organiser. I haven’t uploaded much to it Got a follow back on Bluesky from Reece Dinsdale of ID and Emmerdale fame.

Discussed my Sing Date appearance with August Skye

Highlight was the views from Cloud 23. We had 10 people claiming to be coming – on the day, there were 3 of us. Such is Meetup.

Northern Quarter Antics with Manchester Nightlife Meetup Group

Off work for a big chunk of this week. Not much exciting. Got 2 porn stars to respond to Popbitch’s Baboon vs Badger conundrum. Here’s Helena Locke: and here’s Leigh Darby:

Ran a meetup with Manchester Nightlife to Salmon of Knowledge, a new Irish bar in Stevenson Square, in the site of the old Ply unit. Not a massive Irish bar fan, but I liked the first public night. Big, spacious, tidy. A group member mentioned that someone was in the bar, someone who had come to the group and ‘was an arsehole.’ I couldn’t place who he’d mean for a few minutes until I looked across the bar. Turned out it was this particular arsehole, who kicked off because we wanted to stay in Raft and he didn’t. So, back to Salmon: he didn’t see us, as far as I know, but the team wanted to move on, so we hit Flok, Lost in Tokyo and ended in Guilty by Association, where I bumped into some old friends and had a dance off with a lesbian and won.

A good night and furthermore a good week.

MAGA Mitherers, Meetups and Mocktails

Trump’s assassination attempt has brought all the MAGA cranks out of the woodwork over social media.

Wednesday night with family:

Friday night: a Meetup friend got in touch to tell me about a bar meet happening in Manchester’s NQ64, a gaming arcade-cum-bar on Peter st. The event was publicised through Eventbrite, a ticket app, although I wasn’t aware of that til I was there. I’d been meaning to try NQ64 because although I’m not a gamer, it’s a unique twist of the regular bar concept. The unit had previously homed Club LIV and before that I think Late Lounge, but it’s now unrecognisable with retro arcade machines, dark walls and neon designs. I gathered they’d started out in Dirty Martini a few doors down.

I’ve swapped numbers with the organiser so I may try another of his. Good group of people. A fair bit younger than me and my mate, but most people are in Manchester now.

We moved on to Crazy Pedros, but nobody from the group seemed to actually come in, then the group moved to Mojo, which I can’t stand, so I lasted maybe 2 minutes before sacking it off and heading to Oast House with the friend who invite me out. Miles better. Didn’t stay late.

Out with extended family Saturday night:

Friday, 15 March 2024

Well. It took 2 days for this project to collapse.

I described on Tuesday I was going to attempt a social media experiment ‘again.’ I was referring to this clusterfuck of a project, from just over a year ago: using a directory of porn stars’ Twitter, uh, X accounts to attempt to boost my blog readership. Using Fame Registry, I found hundreds of accounts from porn actresses - people in a field in which I've received blog retweets before and hence many blog hits.

I sent these two tweets each time:

Hi, I’m a blogger conducting an experiment with social media. My blog is Power is a State of Mind. https://powerisastateofmind.blogspot.com/

I have a small favour to ask, (INSERT NAME): could you repost my blog please? It will be a huge help and I’ll give you a good mention.

This time, I made sure I included the @ handle in the second tweet, meaning the recipient sees both tweets and may do what I ask. Otherwise, I'd have been tweeting back to myself, which is an infuriating glitch that Musk seems to have created. I investigated nearly 80 accounts, tweeting to those that had been active in the last month, of which there weren’t many. People - porn stars at least - have largely given up on X.

One person, Kathia Nobili, reshared (Elon Musk won’t let us call it a retweet any more) to her 57.7K followers. I managed to do this for 2 days, before X slapped me with this:

How long is this for? I have no idea. To be fair, I did get a little boost.  I'm now at 1,112,001 page views. 3K hits today.

So yeah, that’s another thing from my Before 42 bucket list ticked off, fail as it was. Scandinavia is booked. I guess I do what I want now!

Flexibility, Films, Food, Followers

Working on this flexibility project. Making steady progress. Finished the cereal, bread and porridge. Now just buying dairy, meat, fish, tuna, fruit juice for smoothies, and veg. Dipped under 80kg. Don’t seem to be getting anywhere with my 5km run, and haven’t been on the treadmill much, but the bikes in Oldham Sports Centre have virtual races around Europe’s countryside, so touring – on video at least – Austria, Italy and France has been interesting. And exhausting. The last one took me 2hrs 20 mins.

Managed to squeeze in a couple of January restaurant deals this week.

I don’t think I’d have a nacho pizza again, but the pepperoni I had a few years ago I seem to remember being brilliant.

Also, Julia Ann, who I swear had been following me on Twitter for over a decade, took umbrage to a comment I made opposing drug prohibition. She’s not following me now, whatever the case. But she must have been, because how else did she reply to my comment, which was for someone else entirely? (Someone who, it seems, blocked me.) I think it was about Jesse Jane’s death, although I now can’t see.

And that was my week off. It flew by.

2024

Max Fills and Tanya Tate liked my comment about British and American spelling. New year at a house party. Good fun. Then I darted into the City Centre to watch kickout time.

What a way to start 2024.

My most-hit YouTube video has ben taken down due to being ‘graphic sexual content.’ Titled ‘Spankathon,’ the video – from 2015 – featured 2 fully-clothed women spanking each other’s backsides. The event in Manchester was, ironically, in response to British censorship laws.

Lesson here: if your content is in any way risky, best off putting it up on a platform like X or maybe Mastodon. Or, if you’ve got a blog, upload the content straight to your blogging platform.

I’ve now got a strike on Youtube. I could have sworn the M.E.N article had a video too, but no.

Manchester favourite Cottonopolis, a great Northern Quarter bar, has closed. I have fond memories of seeing Andy Smith from Portishead DJing there in ‘17.
