The Machinist Diet is Complete… sorta

A month ago I set a challenge to diet down to a weight target by eating only a can of tuna and an apple every day. This was, if the DVD is correct, how actor Christian Bale prepared for his skeletal role in 2004’s The Machinist.

I started this on the 15th August. I know through experience that diets can be hugely wasteful if you’ve already got food in your fridge and freezer, as diets can end up lasting longer than you might expect and stuff goes off. So I alternated. A can of tuna and an apple for tea one day, a full meal from the fridge freezer the next. Very steadily, the weight started to drop.

The month-long project ended with a deadline of 15th September. I started at 86.2kg and ended at 77.6kg. I had been 76.9kg at one point. A lot of skipping and gym classes kept me burning calories. The classes were HARD when you’ve hardly eaten anything, and skipping just gets very clumsy and it’s hard to work up a sweat when you’re constantly tripping over the rope through exhaustion.

It becomes more confusing when you’re watching the first 2 seasons of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, trying to follow the incomprehensible plot.

But the diet is over now, and for the moment, I’m eating what I want. Weight is predictably flying back up, but I’m finding I’m fuller much quicker. A stomach has the tendency to shrink when virtually nothing goes in it.

I may try The Machinist Diet again next year, by depleting the freezer first and solidly sticking to 1 can of tuna and 1 apple every evening.

The Machinist Diet

In 2004 Actor Christian Bale took up the titular role of The Machinist, a factory worker with insomnia whose interactions – possibly hallucinations – with other people drive him to the brink of insanity. I saw it in probably 2006. I enjoyed it but didn’t understand it. I made a plan to watch it again, but then life got in the way.

20 years later, I’ve managed to get my hands on the DVD and bargain basement price, and it includes some extras. At the time I watched it I was probably in the best physical shape of my life, doing Muay Thai and weights, and eating my mum’s excellent cooking. There was definitely no need to lose any weight. In 2010, however, I moved out, and under the lacklustre care of social services, I spiralled. I had no idea how to cook, shop for food or budget. The abs went within weeks, and never came back. At the time I moved out I was 68kg. Over the years, I spiralled up to 90kg. I managed to diet down to 72 a couple of times, but I’m currently 86.2.

So. I need to lose exactly 14 kilos. 72.2kg is the weight I know I need to be to fit into my 30” suit trousers. The fastest way I can imagine doing this is this what I understand Christian Bale did to achieve that gaunt physique.

Pretty simple really: a can of tuna and an apple every day. This might be a terrible idea, but the reality is a working kitchen usually is already stocked with a load of food. If you try these diets, you risk letting the food go off, even if it’s in the freezer. These projects can take longer than you might expect. So, for the moment, I’ll alternate between eating a full meal a day, and eating a can of tuna and an apple a day. I’ll do this until the rest of the food runs out. But essentially, cans of tuna and bags of apples will be all I’ll be buying until I hit the target weight. In the meantime, I’ll watch the whole of the DVD, plus other media, and use a skipping rope until the weight comes off. I’ll try to keep up with gym classes, but I expect I’m going to have to reduce the weights a bit. Fighting the cravings and sticking to the plan is the tie-in to psychology. The mental task of committing to the diet is probably harder than the physical effort of moving when incredibly hungry.

I’m getting drunk tonight, but after that… it begins.

House Music in Manchester Friday Night

Superb return of Comic Con Manchester on Saturday. Blog post coming.

Commonwealth Games are in full swing. We get to see parts on Channel 5, and a little more on BBC Alba. England are in 2nd place on the medals table behind Australia. I’m working through this Commonwealth Games Fit project I set for myself.

Manchester Day Parade took place yesterday, a celebration of the city by a consortium of different local social groups. More on each of these soon.

Greater Manchester elects a new mayor on Thursday. Looks like I’ll be going for Greens, with Geraldine Goggins on the ballot. I’m disgusted in Labour’s Zionism, their refusal to accept the ICC’s ruling that Israel is conducting a genocide in Gaza, and their apparent lack of understanding of their own rules on Personal Independence Payment. It’s not an out-of-work benefit. Labour seem unaware of this. Greens, on the other hand, want to properly tax the billionaires, fund the NHS and social care system, build more affordable homes, fund proper mental health support, increase the minimum wage, stop the gig economy and stop corporations from dumping literal shit in our rivers, to name a few reforms. So they’ve got my vote.

Friday night: Manchester club Joshua Brooks welcomes house music producer Miguel Campbell for Full Circle, a night of deep house. His 2011 hit Something Special is still a banger.

Manchester Nightlife are headed there. 3 of us have signed up so far. Be 4th!

New Batman spinoff Clayface has finally released their trailer.

Clayface was partly filmed in Castlefield Manchester, and also Stockport Centre. Look carefully and you’ll notice Stockport Plaza. Back in September last year, the production of the movie used Castlefield Manchester as a filming location. I took a look.

Sunday night: The Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony takes place, around 6pm (the exact details aren’t readily available). I’m working through this absurd Commonwealth Games Fit project, with an unrealistic goal of losing nearly 13 kilos. I wouldn’t count on it happening at present.

That’s this week. Quiet week next week.

Commonwealth Games Fit

Glasgow once again host the Commonwealth Games. This time, the BBC have only got limited rights, and apparently are only being shown on their Scottish Alba service. BBC say ‘Alba is to screen nightly live coverage and highlights throughout the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.’ Great if you’re in Scotland. Looks like we can watch it on iPlayer. Not sure there’ll be subtitles over the Gaelic, though.

Thankfully Channel 5 is to show 2 hours of highlights. Sounds pretty shit, as a lot of what makes the games good is watching people progress through the heats to the finals, in some unusual sports that we don’t normally get to see.

My plan was to beat as many chin-up and dip records as I could while watching the games, and once again try to get my weight down to hit the revered 72.2kg target. I’m currently 84.9. Sometimes I’m free during the day, sometimes at night. But if all we’re getting is highlights, it’s rarely going to be on when I’m ready to watch. When it is, it’s not going to take long to watch through that. So…

I’ve got 3 films and a series left on my Netflix watchlist, then I’m going to cancel. I’ve got a ton of Blu-Rays and DVDs to get through. Skipping, chin-ups, dips and a few gym classes, plus a good clean diet, should sharpen me up. By the end of the closing ceremony in the evening of 2nd August, I plan to be fitter physically and mentally, and I expect England will be taking home a ton of metalware too.

All this kicks off tonight at 8pm.

Commonwealth Games starts Weds

This touchtyping project comes to a close on Wednesday. Made some progress.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games starts Wednesday 23rd. I’ve got a fitness project that I’m going to do in conjunction with that. More to come.

Saturday: Comic Con Manchester returns to Bowlers Exhibition Centre in Manchester for 2 days of stalls, movie stars, photo ops, Q+A panels and cosplay. I’m looking forward to meeting Carrie Henn – Newt off Aliens – and Bill Duke – Mac off Predator and Cook off Commando. This will be my third attempt to meet him – looks like he’s actually turning up this time. It’s gonna be great. There’s a meetup with Manc Mates with a couple of people signed up. Saturday has sold out, though, so they’ve either bought their tickets or they haven’t.

No plans for the evening.

Workout in the Park?

A little different this week – summer weather means it’s worth doing daytime activities rather than 2am bar crawls. I figured, why not something more healthy and outdoor?

We’ve got a new park in Manchester. We could utilise Mayfield Park for an outdoor workout session, get some vit D and serotonin in while we have the chance, then get soft drinks and a bit of food to replenish. I’ve set up a meetup on Manc Mates, a group I took over a while ago, which I use for non-nightlife related events. It’s quite different to what I’d normally do, so feels like a bit of a risk. Also I’m not a PT. I’m just a guy who works out. Just wondered if people wanted to do that with me. 12pm on Sunday.

In other news, looks like this 4-month bot surge on the Blogger platform is over. At one point I got nearly 28k views in a single day. More recently I got 700. Still. I hit 2.8 million overall hits recently.

Wedding Fit: Results

My sister got married last weekend. Great time in the woodlands of Swillington Leeds. Trees, fairy lights, a humanist ceremony and a range of Yorkshire-based caterers came together to make a magical evening among the oaks.

Prior to all this: a plan to get as fit as possible in the 2 month run-up to the wedding. Wedding Fit involved no junk food or alcohol and a set of exercises. I was at 86.7kg. Just before the wedding I was down to 81. Nowhere near where I wanted to be, but it’s a start. I also targeted a few things in the gym and made some progress.

Pec fly was 73kg. Got 77kg.

Gym Master Pulldown is a lateral movement with palms facing together about 50cm apart. I was at 60kg. Got 68kg.

Converging Chest Press is a seated machine that brings the hands closer together as they are extended outward from the shoulders. I was at 73kg and ended at 86kg.

Chest Press is your standard bench press movement in seated position. This was my oldest PB at 103kg from 2013. Prior to a recent refurbishment at Oldham Sports Centre, the bench press was notoriously difficult to get on. The new chest press machines have made things a lot easier. This time I managed to get up to 105kg.

Lots of Pump and Circuit classes also kept me strong and hammered the cardio, as did a local running route. Essentially, saying no to all the sugary, carby food was the biggest challenge as per.

Now, a minor break from dieting before I try again to hit that elusive 72.2 weight.

Wedding Fit

There’s a wedding coming up. Don’t worry, not mine.

I’ve got a new suit that fits me as I am, with a little give, in fact, but the wedding isn’t until late June. Hence, there is a 2-month period in which I could attack one of the ‘Before 44’ challenges I gave myself last August.

In particular, I’d like to get back into my older suit trousers, most of which are 30” waist. If I do this before the wedding, the suit I have will doubtlessly be too big, but with enough time I could easily fill it back out.

Furthermore, I’d really like to beat my bench press record, which has been stuck at 103kg since 2013. Other records are overhand chin-ups (23), underhand chin-ups (20) and dips (170). I’ve got a sprint machine record of 23.6kmph, and a local, hilly, 5.4km running route that I have done in 36:23. Let’s see if I can smash through all of these. I currently weigh 86.7kg. I know I need to be 72.2kg to fit into my other suits.

There’s a way this can be done. I’m drinking tonight and eating food with the Meetup group. After that, no more alcohol. No junk food. Fight the cravings (hence psychology). Lots of gym classes and body weight exercises. Recipes. A welcome break from the constant plundering of my liver at the hands of overpriced cocktails and cut-price Aldi liqueurs.

Here we go...

Another Bodybuilding Month: Results

I’ve spent the last month religiously grafting at Oldham Sports Centre trying to gain as much strength as possible. I have eaten like a monster – reasonably healthily – and worked out twice a day on most days.

The results are in. I’m exactly the same weight – 81.4kg. Bizarre.

I split down the workouts into chest, back and leg sessions, plus mixed in pump (weight movements in time to music) and circuit (rotating around different exercises in rounds) classes. I’ve made some serious progress.

Close hand lateral pulldown.

Hands close together above the head, pulling the handle down to chest level. This is my favourite movement of all of them. I started this with a PB of 70kg from April ‘25. I managed to work this up to 100kg.

Angled leg press.

This is a new machine that’s been added in a recent refurb. Seat is leant back, foot plate is higher than head level, with weights loaded behind it, pushing straight out. I started this at 70kg and worked it up to 190kg.

Pec fly.

New machine. Seated position, hands at chest level, bringing the handles together in front of the sternum. Started at 50kg, worked up to 73kg.

Diverging Lat Pulldown.

New machine. 2 handles on pulleys above the head, pulling down to shoulder level. Had a record of 104kg, immediately got 109kg, the highest weight on the machine.

Quad curl.

Kicking the lower leg straight out. Had a PB of 106kg, got 111kg, the highest weight on the machine.

Leg press.

Seat is horizontal and moves back as you push out. Foot plate stays static at hip level. I had 136kg on this. Worked up to 186kg, the highest weight on the machine.

Diverging Low Row.

Seated with feet out in front on a fixed plate, 2 handles at hip level are pulled into the waist. I had 100kg, got 109kg, the highest weight on the machine.

Wide grip lateral pulldown.

Seated with hands on the bar above the head, angled down at the end, pulley lifts the weights as you bring your hands down to shoulder level. My record was 75kg from 2016, as far as I could see. I got up to 91kg.

Hamstring curl.

Before the refurb, the hamstring machine was a seated affair with handles at the hips so you could hold yourself in place. Now, the hamstring machine is prone, with a slight bend at the torso, which really isolates the hamstring muscle. You aren’t using your upper body to compensate. This time I could only get as high as 41kg.

Converging Chest Press.

Seated press where the hands come slightly closer at the end of each rep. I had a PB of 54kg. Ended at 73kg.

 Chest Press.

Standard seated machine where the hands are pressed straight out in front. This is my oldest PB of 103kg from 2013. I got close, but no PB this time and this remains my oldest record.

So yeah. Some good progress made. I forgot to take a picture of myself before, but this is me now:

Results of a month of bodybuilding. No powders and definitely no steroids. Just good food and graft.

And now to get drunk for the first time in a month! I've cut out junk food and alcohol and fought the cravings, hence it's a Psychology Saturday post.

Another Bodybuilding Month

Back in 2023 I committed to a month of bodybuilding, an attempt to beat as many strength-based personal bests as I could. I made a fair bit of progress.

Since then, I’ve stuck more to gym classes rather than my own workouts, but I’ve felt my strength improve a lot. Pump classes have given me a lot of endurance. Also since that March, Oldham Sports Centre has been upgraded, with more equipment added as time has gone on. I’ve had a dabble on a lot of new weight machines.

I’d really like to have a good crack at these, and set some new PBs. In Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, he suggests 6 reps for the top weight. Again, I’ll split the workouts down into chest, back and leg sessions. Rest Monday, gym session Tuesday morning, gym session Tuesday evening, gym session Wednesday morning, Pump class Wednesday night, Pump class in the middle of Thursday, gym session Friday morning, Circuit class Friday night, Pump class Saturday morning. Sunday… hopefully a gym session in the middle of the day.

No alcohol. No junk food. No protein powder, instead leaning into health snacks like nuts and dried fruit. Lots of recipes, ideally veg-heavy. If I can, I’d also like to get down to 72kg. I’m currently 81.4. Fucking fat bastard.

That, plus the gym project itself, are 2 of my Before 44 bucket list.

Christmas Party / Santa Dash / Christmas Markets

Friday night: public sector staff party in Oldham Events Centre, Oldham Athletic Football Club’s function rooms. Great evening with teammates, Christmas dinner, photo booth, and a dance.

The annual Saddleworth Round Table Santa Dash took place on Saturday, raising money for local causes. Picture a thousand Father Christmases charging through the leafy suburbia of the Yorkshire foothills and you’ve got the gist of the event. My family have done it for a few years. Back in early October I made a plan to get fit for this, aiming to get down from 82.1kg to 72.2kg. I ended at 76.9. Oh well. Race went well on the day, completed the 5km course in 29:55. I’m happy with that.

And then I got steaming in Manchester with my Meetup group.

Christmas markets #meetup last night with Manchester Nightlife. Beef Yorkshire pudding wrap, chips and a Christmastini. Shambles area near The Printworks.

Great food and drink on the Christmas Markets. Ended in Roxy Ballroom and got my arse handed to me on pretty much every game we played – pool, shuffleboard etc. Oh well. Finally, vampire TV show Talamasca is currently at No.1 on Netflix. Believe it or not a part of this was filmed in Oldham’s nightclub Liquid and Envy in October last year. I got these shots. I’m watching it now. Predictably average.

Santa Dash / Christmas Markets This Week

Great night with Manchester Nightlife #meetup last night to the Christmas Markets. Stumbled on some cow cosplay, had pork burger and fries, and a banana and Nutella pancake.

Christmas Markets went down well last Saturday with food and drink. There are that many markets that I figured it’d be good to do it again. But first…

I’ve got a work Christmas do on Friday and I don’t even know where it is. I can’t drink as I’ve got the Saddleworth Santa Dash the next day.

I’ve been training for the charity run several months. That’s on the Saturday. 5Km race through the hills of Oldham with an estimated 1000 Father Christmases. I’ve got my outfit ready.

After this… Christmas Market meetup again, this time around the Shambles Square area between Printworks and Harvey Nichols. Manchester Nightlife are meeting in the ancient and toasty Sinclairs Oyster Bar and heading out to the stalls for food and drink. This time, I’m drinking. I see a few Baileys hot chocolates in my near future.

Maybe yours too!

Healing the Knee: Results

Saw the Muscular Skeletal doctor 2 weeks ago about an old knee injury. I couldn’t run on it and anything that wasn’t a static leg movement was causing some pain. MSK Dr ran a few tests, established there was no tear, but advised me to build up the muscles around the knee with certain stretches and exercises.

He gave me a 2-week programme including straight leg deadlifts and certain stretches, so I set that as a challenge for myself. I dug out some old records for gym work and aimed towards getting new PBs.

Most days I did a couple of sessions a day, including some pump classes and gym sessions. I strapped up with a knee support and hammered away at it for 2 weeks, trying for new records. They are:

Quad curl Record from May ’21 was 70kg. This month I got 77kg on a first attempt and ended at 106kg.

Hamstring curl Record from November ’20 was 60kg. This month I got 36kg on a first attempt and ended at 50kg.

So. Progress on one, and failure on the other. But it’s the hamstring that feels more connected to the injury. That’s where the pain was when I ran. I haven’t tried running yet. I should. Straight leg deadlifts and leg stretches felt okay. I didn’t go too far on either one. Today I hit the deadline, and it’s time to phone up and book another appointment.

Healing the Knee

‘Now the leg, huh?’

-Hector the Toad, Scarface

I have a problem with my left knee. An old injury. Not sure what it’s from. I’ve spent my adult life doing martial arts and running and weights, so it’s probably a cumulative issue. I weight train regularly without pain, but I could barely run to the end of the street the other day, so booked in with the Muscular Skeletal doctor, the MSK, and he ran a few practical tests.

The upshot: it’s not the knee. Not Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS), as a friend suspected. There’s no tear to any ligament. However, the muscles around the knee could do with being built up. (This came as a surprise as I do pump class 3 times a week and I’m lifting more all the time.)

MSK Dr gave me a 2-week gym plan with leg stretches, hamstring curl and stiff legged deadlift to work on. Quad curl isn’t listed but it would make sense to include it in the workout. Hence, between the 22nd this month and the 5th November, I’m going to hammer these exercises and see if I can beat some PBs on these particular movements. The plan suggests 30 reps x3, which is a ridiculously high number of reps. Sorry, I’m sticking with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 12, 10, 8, 6 reps with increasing weight. I’m still doing pump class, which seems fine because most of the movements include movements with planted feet, and don’t involve the kind of impact that has been giving me pain. Circuit class, which has a lot of jumping around, is out for the moment.

I’ll review when the programme is over, and I’ve seen the MSK guy again.

But no, no amputation is necessary, unlike Scarface’s Hector and his choice of dismemberment.

Santa Dash 2025

It’s 2 months to the 2025 Saddleworth Santa Dash, an annual race in which a thousand locals dress as Father Christmases and dart 5k across Oldham’s countryside to raise funds for the Round Table, a local charity organisation. It’s great fun. Saturday, 6th December sees the High Street of Uppermill awash with a sea of red and white outfits, with lots of serious runners but mostly people who just want a fun run with family and friends.

The race usually has a local DJ or public figure at the meeting point, hyping everyone up before the starting banner is held up and the whistle blown. At the end, there’s music, stalls, food, drink and games.

I currently weigh 82.1kg, an entire 10kg more than I need to if I want to fit into my suit trousers, one of my tasks for this year. I also want to beat the 31 minute run time I got in both 2018 and 2024. I’ve got a local 5.4km running route that I’ve done in just over 36 mins. It’d be great to beat that. Currently, running is sluggish and gym classes are getting harder. I just had a chicken burger meal last night, and I’m getting drunk in the Northern Quarter tonight, but after that… militant health kick. Lots of soup. Lots of recipes. Adonis figure pending.

Viking Immersion

Back on the 8th July I began a new and doubtlessly neurotic project about Vikings. It’s an era of history I find really interesting, so I wanted to dedicate a bit of time to incorporating Viking lore into my life.

There was a lot I wanted to do that just didn’t work out – axe throwing (nobody could do it with me), and travel to Scandinavian cities (one-way fares might look tempting, but return fares are a lot dearer and flight times were all over the place) were two.

I did manage to pack a lot in. First, I bought Netflix and started ploughing through their Viking-era content.

Then I worked out loads, usually simultaneously in the lounge, working on chin-ups overhand, chin-ups underhand and dips. I was steadily getting closer to records on these, eventually adding 10 more to my dips record, now standing at 170. I hit the gym too to work on deadlift, a movement that was a staple in Viking strength training. It’s a movement I’ve rarely practised in recent years, and my record stood at 82.5kg from 2023. I managed to get to 95kg. Deadlifts take a lot of time in a session, carting plates about and fiddling with the locks to keep the plates secure on the bar. I wish I’d trained more gym sessions, really, which would have elongated the project further, taking longer to get through the Netflix shows. But whatever. It wouldn’t have been easy, when you’re only eating twice a day, as Vikings did (dagmal, day meal, and nattmal, night meal). My gym was actually refurbished in the middle of all of this, so some chin up bars and machines are just not there any more. But I could usually get on something.

My weight came down, thankfully, from 79.8kg to 76.3. Annoying that I couldn’t get it any lower, considering I mostly ate soup and bacon and eggs. I tried to just eat twice a day, but it’s so hard being hungry and trying to focus on your job and work out. I snacked on nuts, like Vikings doubtlessly would have, but the chances of them being Aldi chilli peanuts are pretty low, Scandinavian supermarket chain or not.

I started with Vinland Saga, a Japanese animated series about warriors in Denmark travelling to Britain. In the 2 seasons, nobody actually goes to Vinland, modern-day Northern America. Well animated, but backtracks a lot. Very long, confusing and slow. A lot of the characters are based on real-life people who lived hundreds of years apart from each other. Entertaining, but outrageously violent. As was life back then. There’s a very depressing slavery arc in the second season.

Norsemen was as funny as having your village invaded by beserkers. I lasted 20 minutes.

Zack Snyder’s Twilight of the Gods was a great animated series featuring mythical, almost god-like characters taking on demons and suchlike. Far superior to the director’s Watchmen adaptation.

Vikings Valhalla retreaded familiar Viking storylines – alliances formed between Viking tribes, and between the Anglo Saxon kings and queens, which are usually hugely unstable and involve people getting their throats cut in the process. Leif Erikson is the central subject in this series, whose claim to fame was discovering North America… something he – like the characters of Vinland Saga - doesn’t do in the existing 3 seasons. He does, however, hang out in Corfu for a bit. Fun, but generic.

I also listened to a part of this You’re Dead to Me podcast, first aired on Radio 4, about Viking women and their largely equal role in their culture – fighting alongside their male counterpart and doing a similar amount of chores to the men. Very interesting.

Lastly, I bought Robert Eggers’ Viking epic The Northman on DVD. Incredible movie. Watched that, then again with commentary track, then all the extras. Fascinating stuff.

And that marked the end of the project. Look at this beard I grew.

2-month viking beard after a trim. Tried to get the norse back and sides look.

In the Suit Trousers Again

Back in August I wrote the Before 43 Bucket List, a few tasks to set myself before my birthday. I recently managed one of these: to diet and fast my way down to 71.9kg, and into the trousers.

I then treated myself to a ton of food and I’m now 78.1. Jesus Christ. That’s nearly as much as I was when I started, at 80kg. I didn’t manage to do it before the Tenerife holiday, but not long after. The 15th.

The process: recipes from books, home-made vegetable soup, sweet potato oven chips, intermittent fasting. Avoiding cravings and staying too busy to think about food. I also hammered the fitness, pushing my dips record from 160 to 175. Didn’t quite achieve any other records.

Made it into the suit trousers recently #diet

Holiday Fit – Result

Back in the middle of April I wrote this Holiday Fit blog post. My plan was to beat a load of bodyweight exercise records, beat a running record and get my weight down from 80kg to 72.2kg, in time for a holiday in late May. I came home from this yesterday.

Well, I didn’t beat any records. I got down to 74.4 before I flew out to Tenerife. I’ve come back from Tenerife and I’m now 75.6. Well, that isn’t so bad. I could have been more disciplined in the run up to the holiday.

But once I was out there, I drank a lot of cocktails and went to a few restaurants. I still did a fair bit of walking and press ups and sit-ups, but it was far from a boot camp.

So I’m home now, with a ton of blogging to do about the holiday. I had a great time and have tonnes of pictures and videos to share.

I’ve got virtually no food in the house. I’ve had a hearty chicken dinner at my mum’s tonight. My plan – a couple of potatoes and fish fillets notwithstanding - is to fast from this point. It should only take a few days to hit the target weight. I’ll be eating with the family Sunday afternoon anyway, but life gets in the way sometimes.

Either way, I’m looking forward to being able to walk around in my suit trousers looking dapper.

Holiday fit

Just looking over my ‘Before 43’ bucket list. Damn, I am BEHIND.

10) is to get back into the suit trousers again. I’ve got a family holiday in a month, along with 2 conventions, so it’d be great to beat that one by then. I need to be 72kg. I’m 80. I’ll get drunk tonight, then it will be a month of militant fasting, breaking gym records and following recipes. I managed it in November ‘22 – I can do it now.

The plan:

No more junk food, just recipes and intermittent fasting.

Lose 8kg

Beat the overhand chinup record

Beat the underhand chinup record

Beat the bench press record

Beat my local 5km run record

Now excuse me while I get steaming with Manchester Nightlife Meetup group.

I just spent a month learning nunchucks

What are nunchucks? They’re an eastern martial arts weapon predominantly used in kung fu and karate. They’re ‘two sticks (traditionally made of wood), connected to each other at their ends by a short metal chain or a rope. It is approximately 30 cm or 12 inches (sticks) and 2.5 cm or 1 inch (rope). A person who has practiced using this weapon is referred to in Japanese as nunchakuka (ヌンチャク家, nunchakuka).’ - Wiki.

I guess I’m a nunchakuka now.

A month ago I explained I was going to practice the basics, and upload a video of the results. I’ve dug out a pair of Decathlon foam covered training nunchucks and spent a month dabbling around with them, following Youtube instruction mostly from Florida-based sensei Matt Pasquillini.

I’ve learned a few basic moves like the Outer Orbital, Down and Up, the Bruce Lee Triangle, the Hand Pass, Figure 8, Underhand Pass, Deflecting Strike, Rip Roll, Under Arm Catch and a combination of a few of these. I made a demo of the things I learned, in which I predictably forget several of the moves because I for some reason didn’t copy them all down. The ones I missed out are basically warm-up moves. What’s included are the things I needed time to develop.

Also, I followed a few healthy recipes and did cut out a lot of junk. Went from 78kg to 76.2. Sigh. Fighting cravings, learning and focussing on a new task, learning new recipes… all of these tie into psychology, hence this post goes up on #psychologysaturday.

An interesting, fun and utterly pointless project. Looks good though.
