Big Green Bookshop very recently and
very kindly sent me a copy of Matt Haig's Reasons to Stay Alive, an
analysis and memoir of the writer's battles with depression. The
short, bite-sized book takes small day-to-day examples of Haig's
life, and his challenges with his mental health. The (now older)
author looks back on this time and wisely interprets his actions and
emotions. It's a valuable self-help tool, as well as an interesting
true story.
It's
great if you're dealing with the condition now, as it'll explain a
lot and much of it will resonate with you. But I'd imagine it to be
hugely helpful to those who don't have depression, as most of us who
battle it want others to at least be aware of what the condition is,
and what they can do. Joanna Lumley called it 'a short masterpiece
that might even save lives.' I'd have to agree.
Separately,
I got a tweet off Darth Maul from Star Wars.
